Daniel Harman, Officer Of The North West Company At Fort Alexandria On The Upper Assiniboine, Wrote Of Portage La Prairie On May1st, 1805: "Here The North West Company Have A Miserable Fort, The Local Site Of Which Is Beautiful Beyond Anything I Have Seen In This Part Of The World." The Coalition Of The Northwest Company And The Hudson Bay Company Was Effected In 1821, And In 1832 The Hudson Bay Re-Established At Portage La Prairie, Building A Trading Post On The Site Of La Verendrye'S Fort. In The Rebellion Of 1869 - 1870, The Employees Of The Hbc Post Were Taken Prisoners By Emissaries Of Louis Riel And The Store Was Looted. Some Years Later The Company Discontinued Operation On This Site And The Property Was Converted Into A Farmhouse.
